A Steering Committee consisting of five members of the Positive Women's Network (PWN), representatives from the founding institutions, and several community agencies was established. The committee actively lobbied several key government ministries, and letters of support were obtained from the B.C. Centres for Excellence in HIV/AIDS, St. Paul's Hospital HIV Care Team, appointed designates of the University of British Columbia, Hospital administrations, the Vancouver Health Department, government STD Prevention Programs, the Canadian Clinical Trials Network, and from prominent municipal politicians. The Steering Committee has ensured 1) credibility of the centre within the community, 2) responsiveness to community needs and 3) funding support in the face of significant cuts in hospital and health care budgets. The Steering Committee is being transformed into a Community Advisory Board designed to ensure that the initial successful results continue to be realized.
